I booked a Brit Stop spot at The Three Horseshoes in Alverley. I know the area a little as we used to have annual Christmas meet ups with the extended family at The Mill, that my grandad used to organise, as it was his birthday too. We always really looked forward to them, and the one year when it was his 80th it snowed. Unfortunately, some of the wider family couldn’t make it, as they were coming from as far as Kent, and had to turn back as the snow got worse. Those of us who did make it tried to leave at the end of the night, but ended up getting snowed in. It was great, a lovely, unplanned family sleepover. We even ended up gatecrashing the wedding disco that was taking place there.
Unfortunately, The Mill burned down a few years ago, but they managed to rebuild it into a fabulous modern barn with an open plan feel. I had a pop by to see what it was like but couldn’t go in due to a wedding taking place.
I also used to come to Averley to work when I was a mobile cleaner for a company called Kingsmaid. There was one customer who I will always remember, an elderly brother and sister, who lived in an old house with a humongous great dane. Now those of you who know me know I used to be scared of dogs. I guess this was a baptism of fire to help me get over my fear. I was ok cleaning upstairs but would dread coming downstairs, never knowing if the dog would come trotting like a horse into the room I was in! They were a unique couple, very old fashioned, but used to own a string of nightclubs apparently. They lived just by the church so I passed by on my way to the pub.
The Three Horseshoes was a lovely stop, I was able to top up all my water bottles and charge my laptop and phone while grabbing a drink. The owner was really friendly and helpful, would definitely recommend staying there.
